Enjoying Hamburg

For general information, facts and figures about Hamburg we recommend taking a look on www.hamburg.de and www.deutschland.de (English version).

The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, one of the 16 states of the federation, is the second largest city in Germany with its 1.7 million inhabitants. In this sense, it is a city as well as a state.

Hamburg is also the cultural and commercial center for the whole of Northern Germany. The metropolitan region is home to 3.5 million people, and Hamburg is the shopping and cultural metropolis. The municipal area with its 755 square kilometers is seven times the size of Paris and 2.5 times that of London.

The following is a list of tips for places to visit in Hamburg (all texts have been taken from the original homepages of their respective organizations and institutions):

  6. Bucerius Kunst Forum (Bucerius Art Forum)
Renowned guest curators are commissioned by the Bucerius Kunst Forum to design and develop four exhibitions each year. Many exhibitions are preceded by symposia open to the public, the results of which are published in the exhibition catalog. The symposia take place at the Warburg-Haus in conjunction with the University of HamburgÆs Institute of History of Art. The individual exhibitions illustrate artistic associations and show relationships between periods and disciplines. The Forum thereby creates a common bond between classical and modern art, and between recent European culture and those of ancient times and foreign countries.

Old Elbe Tunnel

Walk through the old Elbe tunnel under the River Elbe. From the other side, the shipyard island Steinwerder, you can enjoy the unique Elbe panorama with a view of the harbor quay, the Michel and the Rickmer Rickmers. Inside the square, dome-shaped structure at the St. Pauli-Landungsbrücken there are four elevators, large enough to carry people and vehicles 24 meters below the Elbe where two tunnels lead to Steinwerder on the south side of the river. Inaugurated in 1911, the tunnel is still in use today. It is open to pedestrians and bikers twenty-four hours a day free of charge.

Fish market (Fischmarkt)

With Hamburg's offering of clubs and discos, "durchmachen", or partying the night away, is a local sport. Absolutely the best way to finish off a long night is a wander around the Fish Market in Altona. Some 700 market traders open their stands right on the waters edge every Sunday morning from 5 a.m. to 9.30 a.m. (from October to March not until 7 a.m.). In fact, there is nothing you can't find here: blood sausage, sweets, pastries, fruit, poultry, spices, cheese, candles and new and second-hand clothes. On top of that, jewelry, odds and ends, nostalgic items and live animals. And, of course, fish: raw, marinated, boiled, smoked.
If fish turns your stomach first thing in the morning, wait for your appetite to return at the waters edge with a coffee in your hand, while those more daring bite heartily into a fried fish roll...
