Academics

The Program in International and Comparative Business Law is divided into two sessions, each session lasts six weeks, and is followed by an exam week. Some courses will be offered for the duration of the two sessions or term, others will be offered as three- or four-week compact courses. Most courses are worth 2 American Bar Association (ABA) or 4 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits. In these courses, experienced Bucerius and international professors, as well as legal practitioners (see "Faculty/International Program"...) communicate their knowledge of German, European, and international law and legal practice to the international students. Should their knowledge of German allow, students may sit in on the courses offered in the German LL.B. program.

The course credit system is based on the guidelines of the ABA. European students can earn ECTS points. The minimum course load is 4 ABA/8 ECTS credits per session. The German Law Survey course is mandatory. Although credits can be earned with the German Law Survey Course, the credits do no count towards the minimum requirements of 8 ABA credits during the program. Students may select as many courses as they want, but should consult their school regarding its credit transfer policy. The acceptance of any credit or grade for any course in the Exchange Program is subject to the home institutions decision.
