A trimester at Bucerius Law School

Each fall semester, Bucerius Law School offers up to three law students from outside of Germany the possibility to attend the International Exchange Program, which is primarily offered to students from our partner universities. Applicants will be considered based on their academic performance at their home university.

Required level of legal studies

At least two years of undergraduate level law studies if from a country where law is an undergraduate degree.

 

At least one year of graduate level law studies if from a country where law is a graduate degree.

Program overview

Visiting students participate in the "International Exchange Program in International and Comparative Business Law", which is primarily offered to students from Bucerius partner universities. Especially designed as a one-trimester exchange program, it takes place each fall from September through December and is taught in English by Bucerius professors as well as distinguished guest lecturers and practitioners from all over the world.

Credits

More than twenty law courses are offered and students earn ABA credit/ECTS points for successful participation in the program. It is each student's responsibility, however, to consult their home university as to whether credits and grades earned at Bucerius are applicable towards their degree.

Tuiton fee

The cost of attending Bucerius Law School as a visiting student is 5,200 EUR. This includes tuition, access to the law school's facilities, student services and the chance to participate in numerous extracurricular activities.

How to apply

In order to apply you will need:

  • To fill out an online application form with questions about your motivation and experience
  • A transcript of grades (in English or German) from your current university, including a description of the grading system and, if possible, class rank
  • Proof of English language proficiency
  • One passport-sized photo to be used for a student directory and ID card

English language skills

Participants are expected to have a good command of English in order to take part in the program. Students who are enrolled in a degree program taught in a language other than English must submit proof of English proficiency.

The minimum requirement to participate in an exchange at Bucerius is:

  • TOEFL Internet-Based Test (IBT): 90
  • IELTS Academic Program: 7.0
  • Duolingo: 120
  • CAE: B or CPE: C
  • ILEC

German language skills are not necessary for an exchange to Bucerius, though optional coursework is made available to beginner, intermediate and advanced students of German who would like to improve their language abilities while in the country. German language coursework can be audited or followed for credit, though credit will not be counted toward the minimum course load requirements.
