Biography
Anne Röthel was appointed to the Chair of Civil Law, European and International Private Law on September 1, 2004.
Born in Bochum in 1968, Prof. Röthel studied law at the University of Cologne and Clermont-Ferrand (France). In 1990, she was accepted to the German National Academic Foundation (Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes ) through a university recommendation. After completing the First Legal State Exam, she began working at the Institute for Environmental and Technology Law (Institut für Umwelt- und Technikrecht), University of Trier as a scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), In addition to her postgraduate studies in environmental and technology law, she completed her doctorate in the topic "Basic Rights of a Mobile Society" (under Professor Dr. Dr. Udo Di Fabio).
In 1995, Anne Röthel became a teaching and research assistant for Professor Dr. Klaus Vieweg at the Institute for Law and Technology (Institut für Recht and Technik) at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. After completing the Second Legal State Exam in 1997, she worked in Brussels in the European Commission, before she was promoted to professorship in the topic "The Substantiation of Norms in Private Law." Prof. Röthel's dissertation was distinguished by the Bavarian Postdoctoral Promotion Award in 2000 and supported by the German Research Foundation.
After her postdoctoral promotion, Prof. Röthel received a Heisenberg Scholarship from the German Research Foundation for her further research, before she accepted a position at Bucerius Law School in August 2004. In June 2006 Prof. Röthel got a calling for the Chair of Civil Law at the University of Zurich which she declined.
