How to write a good motivation letter

What is a motivation letter? This is what you need to know.

On our website we say it is: “A letter of 2-3 pages providing information regarding your motivation to participate in the program, your special interests, life experiences, accomplishments, goals, community involvement and any other information that might be helpful to the Admission Committee.”

But how do I write it?

Here are some valuable tips so that you know what we really want to hear from you…

1) Don’t restate your CV

Many applicants write in great detail about their decision to study a certain subject for their undergraduate degree and about their work experience but a lot of the time, that’s it. While this information is interesting to read, most of it is evident in the CV and does not have to be restated in the motivation letter. What we really want to hear is your motivation for wanting to be selected for the Bucerius Master of Law and Business.

2) Connect your work/life experience to the Master of Law and Business

Ask yourself why you would like to study an interdisciplinary program such as the MLB which combines international business law and international management rather than in a program that focuses solely on business law or a program that focuses solely on management issues. We would like to know why you want to study at the intersection of both subjects? What experience at university or at work has made you realize that you want to study in an interdisciplinary Master's program? Give examples of situations in which you realized that knowledge of just one discipline isn’t sufficient in your line of work. Give us an idea of your plans for the future and how the knowledge gained in the Bucerius Master of Law and Business Program will assist you in reaching your professional goals. We would also like to hear about why you would like to pursue post-graduate education in an international setting rather than in your home country.

3) Tell us about your hobbies and extracurricular activities and international experiences

We really value students who like to reach out beyond their academic and professional lives and don’t forget about those who are less fortunate than themselves. If you have done any social projects, charity work etc, we would like to hear about it! We believe that striking a balance between your professional and personal lives is very important. Please share with us what you like to do to recharge your batteries, what are your hobbies?. How do you like to spend your vacation? Have you studied or worked abroad or do you work in an international team?

In conclusion

We would like to hear why you want to study the Bucerius Master of Law and Business, tell us what kind of skills and passions you bring to the table and give us a glimpse of who you are.
