MLB Graduate Story: Senior Consultant at Ayisi and Associates, an Accra based boutique business and legal advisory firm

MLB Graduate Emmanuel Antwi Akoto from Ghana was looking for an international education to build his competencies and increase the chances of working globally. He found this and much more in the MLB Porgram at Bucerius.

1.    What was your main goal when enrolling in the Bucerius Master of Law and Business?

I had reached a point in my career where I needed an international education to build my competencies and increase my chances of working globally. I previously worked with Unilever Ghana and Coca Cola Ghana, both multi-nationals and witnessed first-hand how colleagues with an international background had a different work ethic and climbed the career ladder at a much faster pace.

The MLB Program appealed to me on several levels. First, the inter-disciplinary nature of the program; the reputable faculty at Bucerius and WHU and the career prospects upon completion of the program.

2.    Were you able to achieve your personal goal?

Yes, and much more. Through the MLB program, I learnt the several intercessions of law and business, broadened my network, and got the opportunity to work at African Development Corporation, a private equity firm based in Frankfurt, Germany and focusing on Africa.

My stay in Germany also gave me the opportunity to develop intercultural skills, tolerance and new ways of thinking and solving problems.

3.    Have you had the chance to build up an international network?

Yes I have. During my year, we were 50 students from almost 30 countries. These are networks I still leverage for both personal and professional work. The MLB Alumni from Ghana regularly meets and is currently working on formalizing an association to carry out philanthropic and other initiatives in Ghana. That’s the spirit of Gerd Bucerius.  At Bucerius, we are taught to always give back to the community.

Since completing the MLB, I have also built up an international network by taking part in several summer schools such as the Bucerius Summer School in Hamburg, DAAD Summer Schools at Jena University and University of Duisburg-Essen as well as several international trade fairs. All of these were made possible as a result of coming to do the MLB program at Bucerius. I remain eternally grateful to the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung for giving me a scholarship for my graduate studies.

4.    Could you tell us what you currently do and whether your company/law firm has many international clients?

I am currently working as a Senior Consultant at Ayisi and Associates, an Accra based boutique business and legal advisory firm with vast experience in the practice of law and advisory. We provide tailor-made solutions to our clients engaged in banking, health care, infrastructure, insurance, logistics, oil & gas, maritime, mining, marketing, technology and real estate.

As Senior Consultant, I work particularly with international firms coming to do business in Ghana. I assist them with commercial due diligence, contract reviews, business registration and market entry support. Some of our international clients include MC-Bauchemie, Goethe Institut and The Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana (AHK Ghana). We also have numerous local clients.

These days, a lot of German companies are excited about the possibilities of doing business in Ghana due to the many business opportunities that abound in Ghana, the friendly business and investment climate and the political and security stability which is essential for business growth. We look forward to working with them and helping them achieve their business objectives with practical solutions.
