More than 200 doctoral candidates are currently conducting research at Bucerius Law School. Within their academic careers, some have taken part in a study abroad opportunity and gained valuable experience through the exploration of legal issues that reach beyond national boundaries. Bucerius Law School aims to advance international exchange at the graduate level. To support this mission, the institution has been a member of the Association of Transnational Law Schools (ATLAS) since 2008. The international consortium has committed itself to supporting and promoting networking opportunities among talented doctoral students in the field of jurisprudence.
In addition to Bucerius Law School, current ATLAS members include American Univ. Washington College of Law, Bar-Ilan University, Erasmus School of Law Rotterdam, National University of Singapore, Osgoode Hall Law School of York University, Queen Mary Univ. of London, University College Dublin and Université de Montreal.
Agora - at the heart of the ATLAS collaboration
At the heart of the ATLAS collaboration is the "Agora," an annual two-week summer academy for doctoral candidates, which is hosted in yearly succession by members of the Association. The upcoming Agora will be held on the Bucerius campus in June 2016 and carried out under the academic supervision of Prof. Dr. Karsten Thorn. The event will focus on "Autonomy and Law," a topic to be analyzed and explored from varied perspectives by professors representing the departments of study at Bucerius.
The program includes methodology lectures, thematic presentations and intensive workshops in which the research projects of participants will be presented and discussed. Extracurricular activities and events with local doctoral candidates will round out the program and offer participants an opportunity to exchange with peers in a setting beyond the seminar room.
