Education & Study |

Where did you work before coming to Bucerius?

Before joining Bucerius Law School, I worked in Lahore, Pakistan with a law firm called ‘Surridge and Beecheno’. Prior to that, I had also worked with ‘Sherazi Law Associates’, Lahore. Overall, my professional experience was primarily within the fields of private, corporate and commercial law, family law and litigation. Nevertheless, I occasionally indulged in work related to healthcare law, criminal law, consumer law, procurement, and in-house counselling.

Why did you decide to study in Germany?

There have been numerous motivational factors behind my decision to study in Germany. The most obvious one is the quality of education and international recognition of a German degree. Secondly, hailing from a common law country, I wanted to pursue legal studies within a civil law system, in order to acquire a holistic idea of the prevalent legal systems.

Also, since I wanted to incorporate some understanding about business as I had been working with corporations, it was only natural to choose the biggest economy and the business-hub of Europe i.e., Germany to study in. Another reason would be Germany opening-up more than ever and becoming increasingly attractive for foreign talent with respect to job opportunities.

Lastly, I have been particularly inspired by a famous South-Asian lawyer, philosopher, politician and poet of the 20th century, Dr Allama M. Iqbal, who earned the title of ‘The Poet of the East’ and the ‘Spiritual Father of Pakistan’. Just like me, he was born in Sialkot, lived in Lahore and later came to Germany for studies. Following in his footsteps, I also made the decision to study in Germany and pursue my professional goals.

What makes the MLB Program so special in your opinion?

The MLB Program is unique due to its interdisciplinary approach of combining legal and business disciplines. The curriculum, and intensive and interactive study sessions, along with the excellent faculty make it really special. The program is very practically oriented and helps us build both theoretical and practical skills.

The international atmosphere of the classroom allows for cultural exchange and a shared experience of collaboration. Additionally, it also provides the opportunity to grow in your respective area of expertise or explore new disciplines of interest which could be interesting for future career paths.

What are the biggest differences between Germany and Pakistan?

Overall, the two countries are generally very different from each other with respect to traditions, culture, cuisine and weather. Besides that, while Pakistanis like to flaunt their colourful dresses, Germans prefer to exhibit a subtle fashion statement. With respect to culinary traditions, Pakistan is known for its sizzling and spicy cuisine with meat being the preferred choice for many.

On the other hand, you can easily find many vegan options in Germany and the food is also very mild yet tasteful. Also, I am pleasantly surprised to discover the incredible variety of bread in Germany, and having a sweet tooth myself, I find the German tradition of coffee and cake immensely delightful.

Moreover, Pakistanis are also very enthusiastic, outgoing, generous and hospitable as a nation while I found Germans to be quite disciplined, reserved, helping and polite. Nevertheless, some things are very similar between the two countries. For instance, the craze for football, love for tea and the passion for mountaineering.

ALL PORTRAITS

What’s an experience in Hamburg that is completely new to you?

I was lucky enough to experience a lot of new things in Hamburg but the Christmas celebration in Hamburg was a sight to behold. Witnessing the Christmas Markets with all their sparkles, seeing Santa with the sleigh, listening to the carols and, eating traditional foods like the Christmas cookies and pretzels was fascinating to me. I also thoroughly enjoyed the New Year's celebrations. The festivities and the excitement of the people accompanied with the magnificent fireworks in Hamburg caught my eye and celebrating New Year’s Eve with such grandeur was something that I had not experienced before.

How do you like living in Hamburg?

Over time, I have grown very fond of the city. I love living in Hamburg and I am utterly delighted that it is a green and calm city. At the same time, it has a lot to offer to its people, ranging from public parks, water canals, museums, restaurants, theatres and my favourite, the concert hall of Elbphilharmonie. Navigating the city is relatively convenient too. Its rich historical charm and architecture does not go unnoticed and unappreciated. Lastly, the cultural diversity and food varieties enrich one's experience of the city.

What fields of law interest you the most and what are your future career plans?

I am interested in the fields of logistics, corporate law and compliance along with commercial arbitration. After graduation, I intend to pursue job opportunities here in Germany, at a law firm or a corporation within the same fields.

What advice would you give to future students coming to Bucerius?

I would advise the future students coming to Bucerius to buckle up for a wonderful ride, say yes to new experiences, be prepared for the unpredictable weather, make new friends, be kind to yourself and others, work on your academic as well as personal goals and just try to make the most out of your experience in all respects. I would also recommend learning German as this will really help comprehend, appreciate and integrate within the German culture, both professionally and personally.

Juhi, Thanks for the interview!
