The Long Shadow of Opus Dei: Democracy and Economic Growth in Spain
This lecture is part of Prof. Schäfer's ring lecture "New Frontiers in Law and Economics".
Prof. Dr. Rok Spruk, University of Ljubljana – Laibach, Slowenien, examines the effect of democratization and policy reforms on economic growth across Spanish provinces in the period 1950-2016. He Shows that democratization has a temporary growth impact that disappears down to the present day. By contrast, the economic reforms of stabilization and liberalization advised by the economic policy advisors affiliated with Opus Dei appear to have a positive and long-lasting economic growth impact across Spanish provinces.
