On the weekend of 16th and 17th November 2019, the Bucerius Mediation Competition took place for the fifth time. This year, around 60 students from 13 universities and ten different countries came to the Bucerius Law School.
The competition format allows two teams consisting of two students each to participate in a mediation session about a fictitious case and try to come to an amicable solution. The competition thereby offers the participants the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in and knowledge of mediation. Also, they can network with current and former participants as well as professional mediators and lawyers.
This year, the teams met in six exciting preliminary rounds and a total of 28 matches. Afterwards, the Jagiellonian University (Krakow) prevailed in a thrilling final against the runner-up, Aarhus University. Fabian Paehr joined as a mediator and Dr Marcus Bauckmann, James Davies and Mirella Kreder as jurors in the finale. The Marlies-Bauckmann-Prize for Best Negotiation Style went to Hannah Fitzner from Aarhus University. The other participating universities were the Charles University (Prague), the KU Leuven, the Leibniz University Hannover, the University of Marburg, the Russian State University of Justice (Moscow), the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, the University of Ljubljana, the University of Florence , the University of Vienna, the University of Bonn and the Bucerius Law School.
We sincerely thank our sponsors, the Center for International Dispute Resolution and Dr Marcus Bauckmann. The competition was organized by Jan Lohse, Claudia Kück and Jannis Graeve, members of the Bucerius Mediation student group.
The next Bucerius Mediation Competition will take place from 20th to 22nd November 2020. More information about the competition and the Bucerius Mediation Team is available on Facebook and LinkedIn.
