On December 18, 2015, the city of Hamburg held its first forum on the subject of refugee aid at the Fish Market. We.Inform., a campaign of the association Bucerius Helps (Bucerius Hilft), was among the many initiatives, institutions and projects represented at the event.
We.Inform. was launched by students and alumni of Bucerius Law School in October 2015. The mission of the project is to offer information about the various support services that exist in Hamburg and provide answers to key questions facing refugees: How do I apply for asylum? Where can I learn German? What happens if I get sick?
The project focuses on efforts relevant to an audience in the Greater Hamburg area. To support its goal, a multi-lingual information portal is being established to provide target groups with details about topics such as asylum, health and leisure activities in Hamburg. Volunteer guides provide personal support at central refugee processing points and, later, at lodging facilities.
At present, the 20-member We.Inform. team includes refugees from Syria and Afghanistan among its volunteers. The project is supported by the Ministry of Labour, Social and Family Affairs and Integration (BASFI) and its head, Senator Melanie Leonhard.
"The afternoon at the refugee support forum was eventful and incredibly valuable to the continuation of the project," said Judith Büschleb, initiator of We.Inform. The passion of individuals and sense of volunteerism was overwhelming. "This shows that we are on the right track," added Büschleb.
Olaf Scholz, First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, was among the visitors to the booth.
