Bucerius Summer Program Visits Hasso-Plattner-Institut
The Bucerius Summer Program in Legal Technology and Operations visited the Hasso-Plattner-Institut in Potsdam in July.
"Law is Engineering" is how Prof. Daniel Martin Katz, Academic Director of the Bucerius Center for Legal Technology and Data Science, opened his lecture to students of the Hasso-Plattner- Institute in Potsdam and participants of the Bucerius Summer Program Legal Technology and Operations in mid-July.
INTERFACE BETWEEN COMPUTER SCIENCE AND LAW
Computer science and law come together at the intersection of Digital Engineering, the undergraduate program at HPI, and Legal Technology, the topic of the Summer Program. Katz spoke about the insights into the legal system he has gained with his research group (including Dr. Corinna Coupette, Janis Beckedorf, Mike Bommarito and his co-director at the Center Dirk Hartung), the effects that technology providers in the legal marketplace have on the ecosystem, and the opportunities offered by this young market segment.
ORDER OF THE DAY
Prior to Katz's presentation, Dr. Frank Pawlitschek, Head of E-School at HPI welcomed attendees, followed by Dr. Ronny Patz from the Hertie School who talked about his research with language technology methods in the legal domain, and Michael Mansfeld, founder of a legal tech startup (neopolis), talking about his vision of the future of contract review. The evening ended with intensive networking over drinks and appetizers.
THE SUMMER PROGRAM
The occasion for the presentation was the Summer Program's excursion to Berlin and Potsdam. The program brings together students and young professionals from around the world for an intensive three-week program on the campus of Bucerius Law School, where they are introduced to the fundamentals of legal technology and legal operations.
"We are very excited about the opportunity to host an event together with HPI. You can sense a shared spirit that connects our institutions," says Dirk Hartung, Executive Director of the Center for Legal Technology and Data Science. He looks forward to further collaboration projects between HPI and Bucerius Law School.
