Honorary Doctorate to Professor Susanne Kalss

Bucerius Law School pays tribute to an outstanding legal scholar and inspiring law teacher by bestowing only the third honorary doctorate in its history.

For the third time since the founding of Bucerius Law School, an honorary doctorate was awarded to Professor Susanne Kalss from the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration on 28 October 2021. The awarding ceremony was accompanied by welcoming words from the president of Bucerius Law School, Professor Katharina Boele-Woelki, a musical performance by two of its students as well as a laudatory speech by Professor Thilo Kuntz.

Kalss’ research is characterised by a distinctly European perspective

In bestowing this honour on Susanne Kalss, the law school pays tribute to an outstanding legal scholar and inspiring law teacher who, as the author of fundamental publications and a prominent personality, has enriched and advanced the discussion and development of corporate law, and capital markets law in particular, far beyond the German-speaking legal sphere. In addition to her European perspective, Susanne Kalss' research achievements are characterised by a comparative-law approach that focuses in particular on the Central and Eastern European EU Member States.

Combining academic depth and a practical approach

By combining academic depth with a practical approach, Susanne Kalss has not only had a decisive influence on the law of her country, but has also provided an incalculable impetus for legislation, jurisprudence and scholarship beyond its borders. In particular, the law of family businesses as a special subject in the area of conflict between company law, tax law, foundation law, inheritance law and family law are deeply indebted to her indispensable suggestions.

Long-standing connections with Bucerius Law School

Susanne Kalss has been closely associated with Bucerius Law School for many years as a member of the advisory board of the Institute for Foundation Law and the Law of Non-Profit Organisations, and has made a lasting impact on the law school through her lectures at conferences of the Institute for Corporate and Capital Market Law and the Notarial Law Centre for Family Businesses.
