Why did you choose to study abroad and why at Bucerius specifically?
I chose to study abroad because I believe that in today's globalized legal world, it is essential to step beyond one's local jurisdiction. I wanted to challenge my existing perspectives, meet peers from diverse cultural backgrounds, and gain firsthand exposure to different legal systems.
I was specifically drawn to Bucerius for several reasons. First, the program's strong commercial and business orientation perfectly aligned with my professional interests. After researching various exchange programs and reading student interviews on the Bucerius website, I felt that the school fostered exactly the kind of ambitious and high-standard environment I was looking for. Now that I finished my exchange program, I can confidently say it was the right choice.
Would you recommend studying abroad to other students from Israel?
Absolutely. For Israeli students, studying abroad offers a unique opportunity to step out of our comfort zone and broaden our professional horizons.
Beyond the academic benefits, it is a significant chance to represent Israel in an international academic setting and build bridges with future legal professionals from all over the world.
How did your term at Bucerius compare to your previous international experiences?
This experience was much more significant than just traveling or visiting a new culture. It wasn't just about seeing a new place, it was about the challenge of studying in a foreign language and adapting to a completely different academic system than what I was used to.
Dealing with legal concepts and high-level coursework in English, while navigating a new environment, made this much more than just a "trip abroad", it was a real test of my ability to adapt and grow.
In what way was studying at Bucerius different than at your home law school?
The most significant difference is the global lens. While Tel Aviv University provides an excellent, deep dive into the complexities of Israeli law, Bucerius offers a more global, comparative approach to legal issues, alongside a very practical, business oriented curriculum.
What was most surprising to you about studying abroad?
I was pleasantly surprised by the "instant community" that formed. I didn't expect a group of strangers from completely different continents to become such a tight-knit support system so quickly.
Academically, I was also surprised and impressed by the highly interactive nature of the classes the constant dialogue between students and professors makes the learning process very dynamic.
What is the most interesting thing you learned academically and personally during your exchange term?
Academically: I gained a much deeper understanding of international commercial law and how legal frameworks are adapted to facilitate cross-border transactions. Seeing how different jurisdictions solve similar problems was fascinating.
Personally: I learned how to adapt quickly to a new environment and discovered that despite our different backgrounds, law students everywhere face very similar challenges and share similar drive and aspirations.
What was your favourite experience during your exchange term?
My favorite experiences were definitely the social gatherings and events organized by the university. These moments allowed us to bond outside the pressure of the classroom, share our different cultures, and build friendships that I know will last long after the term ends.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the future exchange students at Bucerius?
Don’t hesitate for a second, just apply! My best advice is to arrive with an open mind and a "yes" mentality.
Participate in every social activity, join the study groups, and take advantage of the incredible networking opportunities. The months go by faster than you think, so make every moment count!
