The new Vice President, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Jörn Axel Kämmerer, is an expert in public law, European law, and international law. He has been at Bucerius Law School since 2000 and will hold the position of Vice President for a period of three years. Professor Kämmerer intends to use his experience to strengthen cross-border research networks.
Prof. Dr. Michael Grünberger, LL.M. (NYU), President of Bucerius Law School: “With the election of Jörn Axel Kämmerer, we are making a clear commitment to internationality. Professor Kämmerer is well-respected internationally, and he has an extensive network within Europe and around the world. A core element of our new strategy is the renewal of legal education in an increasingly connected world. For this reason, international cooperation is gaining a greater focus — even if it is becoming more challenging.”
Bucerius Law School has decided to strengthen the vice presidency by extending the term of office from one to three years and by giving it a clear focus: internationalization and global perspectives.
Strengthening Global Connections
Prof. Jörn Axel Kämmerer, Vice President of Bucerius Law School: “We have laid a remarkable foundation with our International Office, the Master of Law and Business, and the Bucerius Summer Programs. I would like to build on these successes and expand the component of international exchange and cooperation at the research level.” He adds: “Since its inception, Bucerius Law School has aspired to be part of the international dialogue. We are now building on this foundation and strategically expanding our global engagement.”
Professor Kämmerer’s work will focus specifically on expanding the network of partner universities, advancing the internationalization of academic research, further developing the academic curriculum, and promoting student mobility.
Professor Kämmerer, who holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Lisbon, has extensive international experience and expertise. He has been a guest lecturer at universities around the world on numerous occasions, regularly speaks at conferences in many countries, and publishes in four languages. Since 2022, he has been president of the Societas luris Publici Europaei (SIPE), a European association for public law.
New strategy sets ambitious goals
In the summer of 2025, the university adopted a new strategy to mark its 25th anniversary. This includes launching standalone bachelor's and master's degrees, integrating student legal clinics into the curriculum, redesigning the program leading to the state examination, and emphasizing the law school’s societal impact. The new department of the Vice Presidency underscores the university's commitment to continually rethinking legal teaching and research.
