There have been profound political changes in the European Union and its Member States. Since the Brexit, it is conceivable that a long-term Member will leave the Union. Further, many citizens express their resentment against the European Union by supporting nationalist parties. Are there ways in which the European Union can counter this trend to renationalization? And can the European Union play a part in strengthening democracy at the national level? Miguel Maduro, who knows the topics from an academic’s as well as from a practitioner’s point of view, will deliver a lecture on the subject.
About the speaker: Miguel Maduro is Professor of Law at the European University Institute, Florence. He was Advocate General at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg from 2003-2009 as well as Portuguese Minister in the Cabinet of the Prime Minister and for Regional Development from 2013-2015. The talk will be followed by pretzels and wine.
The event will be held in English. It is open to the public, access is free. Registration is necessary.
