The most innovative element of the conference and the Cambridge Compendium lies in various topics being addressed from both a commercial and an investment arbitration perspective in order to highlight the commonalities as well as the differences between these two fields. For this project, the editors Professor Stefan Kröll (Bucerius), Professor Andrea Bjorklund (McGill) and Professor Franco Ferrari (NYU) assembled outstanding scholars and leading practitioners to cover more than 70 chapters.
In Vienna, eleven topics – spanning from party autonomy or features of consent to post-award issues or human rights – were presented by the authors. After each session, the 80 participants – from both academia and practice – joined into vivid and controversial discussions. Among the speakers was Bucerius-Alumnus Dr. Friedrich Rosenfeld, whose chapter deals with the protection of weaker parties.
The conference was graciously hosted by the University of Vienna and co-organized by Bucerius Law School, Hamburg, New York University (NYU) and McGill University, Montreal.
The timing of the event – just prior to the commencement of the 24th annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot – is part of the Moot directors’ efforts to organize an ever more appealing academic program for arbitrators and professors in the context of the competition. The Cambridge Compendium of International Commercial and Investment Arbitration will be published in 2018.
