Education & Study |

Why did you choose to study abroad and why at Bucerius specifically?

Studying abroad is a decision driven by many factors, like curiosity, a desire for new experiences, or personal growth. While it wasn’t the sole reason for my choice, those factors were certainly a significant part of my decision. I love change, and I believe that you need to leave what you know to understand who you really are.

Like many students, I wanted to experience life in a different culture, and improve my language skills. Immersing myself in a new environment offered the chance to meet incredible people, broaden my perspectives, and develop skills that can only be learned through travel and the unique experience of living in another culture. These experiences provide lessons that can not be taught in a classroom. Studying abroad offered me the chance to test my limits and grow in ways I hadn’t imagined before.

I chose Bucerius Law School primarily for linguistic reasons. It offered courses in both English and German, which was the perfect combination for me. Additionally, the university provided a wide range of practical subjects, which I found very interesting.

Would you recommend studying abroad to other students from Poland?

Absolutely, I would highly recommend it to all students. Studying abroad is not just about academics, but above all about gaining new perspectives, learning new languages and forming lifelong friendships. It's a great way to step out of your comfort zone and build memories that will last a lifetime.

The experiences you gain from navigating unfamiliar situations, like adapting to a new environment or overcoming challenges, and learning to be independent, are simply invaluable. They teach you skills that are difficult to develop otherwise, and shape your perspective and character in ways that can only come from experiencing life in another country.

How did your term at Bucerius compare to your previous international experiences?

My term at Bucerius was a unique experience that stood out from my previous international experiences. During my Work and Travel program in the U.S., the main goal was to experience American culture and improve my English. It was more about personal exploration, independence, and gaining a general understanding of another culture by working in a casual setting.

My term at Bucerius actually gave me the best of both worlds. While it was academically challenging and offered incredible opportunities for professional growth, it also provided a relaxed environment that allowed me to broaden my horizons and have fun. The campus atmosphere was welcoming and supportive. It offered a balance of serious academic work and enjoyable extracurricular activities, like for example baking gingerbread cookies. In addition, Bucerius Law School helped me gain clarity in deciding my future career path, which had been uncertain for a long time.

In what way was studying at Bucerius different than at your home law school?

Studying at Bucerius is quite different from my home university in several ways, especially when it came to the relationship between students and professors. At Bucerius, the atmosphere is more informal and approachable. Professors are easy to talk to, and the lines between students and faculty are less rigid. In contrast, at my home law school, the relationship with professors feels much more formal, and there is a bit more distance in the classroom dynamic.

Another major difference is Bucerius' strong business-oriented approach to law. The curriculum incorporates business concepts alongside traditional legal studies, giving students a more well-rounded understanding of how law interacts with the global economy. This is a shift from my home law school, which had a more traditional, law-focused curriculum without as much emphasis on business.

Additionally, Bucerius offers many practical, hands-on classes, which is another big contrast. The university emphasises practical learning, with a lot of group work. My home university, while providing theoretical depth, doesn’t offer as many practical opportunities, which is what made Bucerius stand out.

What was most surprising to you about studying abroad?

What surprised me most about studying abroad was the people. Even though I expected them to be friendly and open, I was amazed by just how welcoming and eager they were to form new connections. Everyone was so open-minded, and we truly created an “Erasmus family”, which was such a special experience, and I’m hopeful that those friendships will last.

On the other hand, what was also unexpectedly surprising was the German train system, where punctuality seemed more like a suggestion than a rule.

What is the most interesting thing you learned academically and personally during your exchange term?

Academically, one of the most interesting thing I learned was the integration of business concepts into legal studies. The business-oriented approach to law offered a fresh perspective that I hadn't encountered at my home law school. It gave me a deeper understanding of how legal principles are applied in real-world business settings, bridging the gap between law and the global economy. This approach not only expanded my legal knowledge but also opened my eyes to new career opportunities where law and business intersect.

One of the most impactful personal lessons I learned was that, despite the vast differences in backgrounds, cultures, and experiences, we are all more alike than we realise. Being surrounded by a diverse group of students and professors from all over the world, I had the opportunity to interact with people who had completely different perspectives and life experiences. On the surface, our differences were striking, such as different languages, traditions, values, and ways of thinking. However, as I spent more time with them, I began to notice common threads that tied us together.

What was your favourite experience during your exchange term?

My most cherished memory will undoubtedly be the Christmas Eve celebration we organised with friends on campus. Spending Christmas Eve abroad comes with its own set of unique challenges, but while searching for gifts together and sharing traditional dishes, something brought us even closer. Each of us prepared a traditional course from our countries, allowing us to share a piece of our cultures. It was truly an unforgettable event and one that I will always hold dear. It was the perfect finale to our entire journey at Bucerius Law School.

What made it even more special was the opportunity to host the gathering on campus, which made it possible for a larger number of people to join in the celebration. Thanks to that, we had the chance to celebrate Christmas dinner surrounded by our new “Bucerius family”. In such a short time, they became an important part of my life, and that will never change.

Why did you decide to stay at Bucerius for another semester and what do you look forward to the most?

The reason I decided to stay at Bucerius for another semester is the same as why I came here in the first place. It’s an amazing opportunity to improve my German. Additionally, the university has so much to offer, and I really came to love this city and its vibrant atmosphere. Staying another semester allows me to fully immerse myself in both the academic and cultural experiences, making the most of everything this place has to offer.

Is there anything else you would like to share with the future exchange students at Bucerius?

For future exchange students at Bucerius, don’t miss the iconic Elbphilharmonie. Alster Lake is one of my personal favourite. It’s absolutely stunning. I would recommend taking a boat ride when the weather is nice, you can even do it as part of the public transport system. For a cosy vibe and a delicious breakfast, you should check out Instinct Coffee or Cotidiano Lange Reihe. When it comes to bars, Zoë II - Sofabar is a great choice. If you're looking for great restaurants, I’d recommend 60 Seconds to Napoli or Bun‘s Streetfood.

Zuzanna, thanks for the interview!
