From Fortnite’s Darth Vader to chatty RPG allies, AI companions are redefining video gaming — and raising new legal questions.

As these digital partners become increasingly autonomous and lifelike, they also raise complex legal and ethical questions. This talk examines how AI companions fit within emerging regulatory frameworks — from the EU AI Act’s risk-based obligations to new U.S. initiatives such as California’s SB 243, New York’s AI companion law, and the proposed federal CHAT Act.

Do these measures strike the right balance between innovation and protection, or do they risk going too far by sweeping in in-game companions — potentially triggering far-reaching duties, such as age verification under the CHAT Act?

Join Tarmio Frei and the Research Center for Video Game Law for a deep dive into how lawmakers are grappling with the challenge of regulating our newest digital allies.

Join us for a brief look at how lawmakers are trying to keep up with the evolving world of AI companions in video gaming. The event will close with pizza and drinks in the Südlounge.
