In Iraq, the media and journalists are exposed to systematic violence. Targeted killings and abductions are not rare occurrences. The work of critical journalists is often being hampered by harassment and court procedures initialized by politicians. One of these critical voices belongs to Kamal Chomani. The Iraqi Kurd Kamal Chomani has long been considered a politically inconvenient commentator in his home country. He barely escaped two abduction attempts and received several death threats. In 2017, he publically opposed the plans for a referendum vote for independence by the Northern Iraqi Kurds. He had to flee his country. When his situation became life-threatening he got invited to Hamburg by the “Hamburg Foundation for Politically Persecuted People”.

From 2009 to 2011, Chomani worked as a correspondent for “Reporters without Borders“ in the Kurdish areas in Iraq. Since 2010, he has been a columnist for “The Kurdistan Tribune“ and other publications in the region.
